[Free] Isometric Animated Character

Postby IFL » Tue Jun 28, 2011 4:54 am

I messed up a huge batch of renders (12 hours wasted - forgot to make the character's socks visible and the angle down is barely off) so I'm sharing my sockless collection with the community. I greatly scaled the images down per my generous client's request, but maybe someone can find use for them. If you're interested in obtaining or purchasing the set at full-resolution (4x larger) or if you want other graphics, let me know.

No credit necessary on these, but usage requires you to tell me.

The layout is: 30 frames per cycle (except for standing), 16 directions, 2 directions per image (except for standing).

I suppose I should mention that most developers will not need that many frames for most situations. This character was animated for variable-speed playback during run-time (walking slow requires more frames than normal-speed walking). I suggest using every 2 or 3 frames.

Do you have a script that does all the posing and rendering?

Yeah. Well... not so much a script, but automation. I created a camera system that renders the character from "n" directions (16 for the character above) for each animation cycle. After the camera was made, I animated the character for walking, running, standing, crouching, crawling, and jumping. Then I set up a light rig that fakes ambient occlusion. That's pretty much it. It takes practice though, and obviously my errors with the above renderings mean I need more. It also helps to have a large collection of tools. And the good ones are pricey...

Anything else you want to know?

Ooh, Nicolas, more reason to add isometric TMX map support!

I think that would require a separate system altogether - one that includes an actual 3d coordinate system. I have the code for andengine that accomplishes that, but it's very difficult to change its use. Its current implementation is being used for an urban environment, and it took me about 8 hours of devoted time to achieve that from the original (outdoor/landscape) system. I've also made it handle both situations, but it kills performance. That's just my 2 cents...

Here's some more of my stuff because I'm bored. Use them freely, and let me know if/how you use them...
I have lots of random stuff and I'm in a giving mood, so let me know if you want anything else. I'll even create something specific just for you guys if you ask nicely ;)

Nice stuff, IFL, thanks! That spinning "ae" logo would look good on a loading screen.

That's actually why I made it. I felt the current crop of logos were insufficient for an orthographic gamestyle.

Here's a larger version. Use it with a light background for best results.
