Graphics copyright issues

Postby Thrasheri » Wed Oct 26, 2011 11:27 am

Hi!

Im having trouble creating graphics to my sidescrolling game. Im trying to create a game that has a retro-look.
Is it ok if i use an old nintendo game sprite as an base and edit it? There are tons of sites which offer these sprites. This maybe a stupid question, but im completely new to these things and i wouldnt like to get sued over a simple android game :)

It depends on whether the copyright owner has released any rights to them or not. Otherwise you'd have to wait for the copyright to expire, which is anywhere from 70 to 120 years in the USA. http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm

Your best bet is to either pay someone for graphics or find public domain graphics. Anything released as "public domain" is free for any use, including commercial.
